1957/58 Division 3 (South)
about the programme
For a season that ended in promotion, it could be argued that Albion missed a trick. For the first time in 10 years the programme was cut to 8 pages and in addition, the design was changed. Instead of the traditional stapled booklet-style, the programme was one sheet of paper, folded to give the 8 pages, similar to a leaflet you might pick up on a day out! The 8 pages were reduced to 4 for two games - Aldershot and the Boxing Day game against Swindon Town. Incidentally, this was the last season when competitive fixtures took place on Christmas Day (see image ,right). With a regionalised 3rd Division, Christmas Day fixtures had been vaguely practical, although the 350-mile round trip to Exeter was a stretch! The 58/59 season would be the first with a non-regionalised 4-division format, so a potential trip to Carlisle (730-mile round trip) would be a bit of a trek! Back to 57/58, and Billy Lane still had his two pages, covering every topic from club news and injury updates, to his thoughts on the introduction of substitutes and the abolition of the minimum wage.
