1964/65 - division four
about the programme
A fairly straightforward season of pocket-sized issues, with 23 league programmes and just 1 extra, for the League Cup tie against Millwall at the beginning of September 1965. The season opened with the news that Albion had signed ex-England international Bobby Smith. Just six months previously, he had scored for England. It was a sensational signing, which caused season ticket sales to soar. The move paid off, as Albion were promoted at the end of the campaign, on a memorable night at the end of April. A crowd of 31,423 saw the 100th goal of the season in a 3-1 win that sparked wild celebrations. The season was marred by the tragic death of midfielder Barrie Rees in March. Travelling back home to his parents home in North Wales after the game against Southport on 26 March, 21-year-old Rees was involved in a collision on the A5. He died from his injuries. The whole town was shocked by the tragedy.
